Battalion: 1/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.

Born in Nottingham and lived at 151, Norton Street, Nottingham. Son of George and Nellie Bird. Adopted son of James and Mary Lane, of Furlong Street, Arnold, Nottingham. He enlisted in the 1/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 6th May 1915 at Nottingham. He was posted to the 1/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 12th July 1916 and went to France on 18th July 1916. He was appointed Lance Corporal, on 6th February 1917 and was killed in action, on 1st July 1917, aged 20, in the attack on the German line to the west of Lens, France.
