Born at Benwick, Cambridgeshire and lived at Barton-le-Clay, Bedfordshire. Son of William and Clara Bird, of 70 Church Street, Luton, Bedfordshire. He was a bleacher and dyer prior to enlisting on 20th June 1916 at Bedford. He went to France on 12th June 1917 and was transferred to the 16th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 2nd July 1917. He was killed in action, 21st March 1918, whilst holding the line near Sorrell Wood/Longeuval, France on the opening day of the German Spring Offensive or (Kaiserschlact)
