Born at Borrowash, Derbyshire and lived at 59, Abington Street, Derby. Son of William and Eliza Bickerton, of 33 Shaftsbury Street,  Derby; Husband of Ethel Cawdell (formerly Bickerton), of 15, Sherwin Street, Derby. He was a Wagon Repairer prior to enlisting 12th June 1915 at Derby. He went to France on 12th October 1915 and was killed in action, on 1st July 1916, aged 26, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

Buried: Gommecourt Wood New Cemetery, Foncquevillers, France. Plot 2, Row G, Grave 30.
