Son of Thomas Walter and Harriet Betts, of 1, Cricket Ground Road, Norwich, Norfolk. He was an insurance clerk prior to enlisting at Norwich. He went to France on 22nd April 1916 then he was commissioned into the 17th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 2nd April 1917. He was killed in action, on 31st July 1917, aged 24, during the attack at Steenbeek, near Ypres, Belgium.
