Born at Mansfield, Nottinghamshire and lived at 34 Newcastle Street, Mansfield.  Son of George and Ellen Betts, of 7 Vale Court, Manfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire. Husband of Mrs M. Betts, of 74, Cope Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. He was a coal miner at Langwith Colliery, Langwith, Nottinghamshire prior to enlisting October 1914 at Mansfield. Killed in action, 28th June 1916, whilst serving in the line near Festubert, France.
