British War and Victory MedalBorn at Sheffield, Yorkshire. Son of Walford John and Alise Benton, of 1, Chestnut Avenue, Hyde Park, Leeds. He was a student at London University before gaining a commission as Second Lieutenant to the 14th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 24th July 1915. He was posted to the 19th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 19th April 1916 and went to France 12th July 1916 joining the 11th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He was killed in action, 28th September 1916, during a night patrol on the German line at Destremont Farm near Contalmaison, France during the Battle of the Somme.
