Son of George and Harriett Ann Bennett, of 28, Sturston Road, Ashbourne, Derbyshire. He was a corset hand prior to enlisting on 28th May 1915 at Buxton, Derbyshire. He went to France on 6th March 1916. Was appointed Lance Corporal 24th May 1916, promoted Corporal 1st November 1916, appointed Lance Sergeant, 11th October 1917 and promoted Sergeant 25th November 1917. He was awarded the Military Medal, London Gazette 2nd November 1917: For gallantry and devotion to duty during operations in the St Julien Sector between 31st July and 6th August 1917,  during which time he bombed and cleared a German dugout. He was killed in action on 16th April 1918.
