Born at Appleby, Leicestershire and lived at Ticknall Lane, Hartshorne, Burton-On-Trent, Staffordshire. Son of Edward Matthew and Annie Benbow, of Church Street, Hartshorne, Burton-On-Trent. He enlisted 26th October 1914 at Melbourne, Derbyshire. He went to France 25th June 1915 and died of wounds, 1st August 1915, aged 20, at No. 10 Casualty Clearing Station, Remy Siding, Belgium.
