Born at Thralby, Yorkshire and lived at Steeton, Yorkshire. Son of John and Jane Bell, of 1, Seed Hill Terrace, Steeton. He was a bobbin carrier prior to enlisting at Cross Hills, Yorkshire. He was killed in action, 8th August 1917, aged 20,  during a German raid on the British Line near Plouvain, France.
