He was commissioned into the 19th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 12th September 1915, He went to France 3rd September 1916 and was was killed in action whilst serving with the 16th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 10th October 1916, at the Schwaben Redoubt on the Somme.
