Sergeant James Baxter

Army Number: 82013 (formerly 34653, Manchester Regiment)

Battalion: 15th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.

Born at Birchvale, Derbyshire and lived at Prestwich, Lancashire. Son of James S. and Sarah Jane Baxter, of 21, Ernest Street, Prestwich. He was a health insurance clerk prior to enlisting into the 14th Battalion Manchester Regiment, on 18th December 1915 at Manchester. He was appointed Lance Corporal, on 29th May 1916 and promoted to Corporal, on 21st June 1916. he was transferred to the 15th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and went to France on 8th March 1917. He was promoted to Sergeant, on 9th May 1917 and was killed in action, on 13th July 1917, aged 23, during a German raid on the British positions at Ephey, France.
