Battalion : 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.

Born at Foleshill, Warwickshire and lived at Leicester. Son of George and Annie Bates, of 73, Roberts Road, Leicester. He was a shoe finisher prior to enlisting 8th September 1914 at Leicester. He went to France 25th February 1917 and was transferred to the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters, 1st November 1917. He was killed in action, 23rd March 1918, age 24, during the German offensive near the Maricourt Road, France.
