Born in Wigan, Lancashire and lived at Kirk Ireton, Derbyshire. Son of John and Martha Alice Bates; Husband of Rose Bates, of 32, Mill Street, Belper, Derbyshire. He was a Baker prior to enlisting 17th February 1915 at Derby. He died from heart disease, 13th December 1915, aged 32, whilst on leave.

Buried/Commemorated : Kirk Ireton (Holy Trinity) Churchyard, United Kingdom.
