Battalion : 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.

Born and lived at Crewton, Derby. Son of Henry and Elizabeth Bates, of 29, Chambers Street, Crewton. He was a general labourer prior to enlisting August 1914 at Derby. He went to France 14th July 1915 and was killed in action, 14th February 1916, aged 21, during heavy German shellfire and the explosion of a German mine, prior to the German attack of the front line trenches, near the canal to the south-east of Ypres, Belgium.
