Born at Bolsover, Derbyshire. Husband of Mary Ellen Bates, of 44, Peverill Street, Hucknall, Nottinghamshire. He enlisted at Hucknall and was killed in action, 15th June 1916, age 38, whilst out on a working party near the canal bank, at St. Jean, near Ypres.
