Born and lived at Walsall Wood, Staffordshire. Son of Henry and Jane Bateman, The Boot Hotel, Litchfield Road, Walsall Wood. He was an assistant in his father’s hotel business prior to enlisting at Walsall. He was killed in action by a German sniper, 11th February 1917, aged 20, whilst in the line near Wieltje, Belgium.
