Born at South Normanton, Derbyshire and lived at Pleasley Hill, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Son of William and Frances Bateman, of 129, Mansfield road, Pleasley Hill. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting at Mansfield, Nottinghamshire and died of sickness 6th April 1915, aged 17.
