Born at Egmanton, Nottinghamshire and lived at Treswell, Nottinghamshire. Son of Bryan and Jemima Bartle, of Stanhop Farm, Treswell, Nottinghamshire. He was a farmer prior to enlisting 12th December 1915 at Retford. He went to France 8th August 1917 with the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and was posted to the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 27th August 1917. He was killed in action, 4th October 1917, in the attack on the German positions at Poelcappelle, Belgium.
