Born and lived at Nottingham. Son of George William and Jane Marguerite Barrows, of 25, Arboretum Street, Nottingham. He was a solicitor prior to be commissioned Second Lieutenant 5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys), Regiment, 1st August 1917. He went to France 11th September 1917 and was posted billeting officer at Bavincourt, France, 7th February 1918 and Adjutant 2nd April 1918. He was awarded the Military Cross, London Gazette 15th February 1919, at Berthaucourt on September 24th 1918, during a successful attack when platoons of another company had been held up, he led his platoon forward under heavy machine-gun fire. It was largely due to his courage, initiative and fine leadership displayed at a very critical moment that a series of very strong machine-gun posts were able to be carried and a large number of prisoners taken. He was killed in Action 3rd October 1918, age 20. at Ramicourt, France.
