Private John Barnes

Army Number : 108914 (formerly 34153 Liverpool Regiment and 39626 Lancashire Fusiliers)

Battalion : 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.

Born at Kilwinning, Ayrshire and lived at Maryport, Cumberland. Grandson of Jane Barnes, of Athenium Hall, Maryport, Cumberland. He was a painter’s apprentice prior to enlisting 11th December 1915 at Maryport, with the Liverpool Regiment. He was transferred to the 15th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers and went to France 20th September 1916. He was admitted to 32 Stationary Hospital Wimereux, France 27th February 1917 suffering from myalgia and debility. He was transferred to England in Hospital Ship St. David, 1st March 1917. He was treated at the 1st Southern General Hospital, Birmingham from 1st March 1917 to the 14th April 1917.. He was posted to the 6th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers , 23rd April 1917 and returned to France 2nd April 1918. He was transferred to the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 3rd April 1918 and was killed in action, 27th May 1918, whilst the Battalion was retiring towards Montagne de Guyancourt, France.
