Son of Arthur Barnes, of Rangoon, Burma. Educated At Cheltenham, College. Commissioned Second Lieutenant 3/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 10th December 1915. He joined D Company 1/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 18th July 1916 at Bretencourt, France, from Etaples, France.
He died of wounds on 28th December 1916, aged 25, after a German raid on the trenches at Fonquevillers, France, when he was seriously wounded by a bomb thrown by a German on the parapet whom he was firing at with his revolver, he died in the evening in the 1st North Midland Field Ambulance.
