Born at The Grove, Portland, Dorset and lived at 16, St. Martins Road, North Holmes, Canterbury, Kent. Son of Richard and Jane Barnes, of 8 Joy Road, Gillingham, Kent. Husband of Amy Maria Barnes, of 13 Adelaide Road, Gillingham, Kent. He was a Fireman prior to enlisting at Kinsale, Ireland, County Cork, 29th November 1900 into the Derbyshire Regiment. He was appointed Lance Corporal 4th September 1914 and went to France 11th November 1914 with the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He was promoted Sergeant 20th March 1915. He was awarded the D.C.M. London Gazette 1st April 1915: “For gallantry and good work on reconnaissance duties, near Frelinghein, France, on 21st February 1915”. He died of wounds 7th May 1917.
