Born at Ruddington, Nottinghamshire and lived at 11, Turton Street, Bulwell, Nottinghamshire. Son of William and Elizabeth Barnes. Husband of Emma Barnes. He was a wagon greaser prior to enlisting at Nottingham. He went to France on 17th August 1915 with the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and was later transferred to the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He was killed in action, 4th November 1918, during the attack on the German line at Sebourg, France.
