Born and lived at Derby. Son of Joseph and Mary Lambert Barnes, of 80, Walbrook Road, Derby. He went to France on 14th November 1915 with the Royal Fusiliers. He was commissioned into the 4th Battalion Sherwood Foresters on 5th August 1916. He died of gas poisoning received during a heavy German gas bombardment at Proyart, France, on 19th August 1918, aged 22, whilst attached to the 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.
