He was born at Southport on 16th May 1895. Son of John James and Emily Barlow, of Birkdale, Southport. He was educated at Holmwood School, Freshfield, Formby, Liverpool and Hailbury College, Hertfordshire. He was employed at the Head Office of the Royal Insurance Company at Liverpool and joined the Liverpool Squadron, 1st King Edwards Horse as a Trooper in 1913.

He served in France from June 1915. He returned to England in March 1916 and after a period of training in Litchfield, was gazetted Second Lieutenant Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 5th September 1916.

He joined his Battalion in France in November 1916 and was wounded at Gommecourt on 9th March 1917. He was awarded the Military Cross London Gazette on 18th October 1917, When with the 1/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. “During a successful raid on the enemy’s trenches on the 25th June 1917, in the St Pierre Sector Lievin. He led his party into the enemy’s trenches, rushed a bombing post, and personally killed two of the garrison. Throughout the action, he showed utter disregard of personal safety, and set a splendid example to his men”.

He was killed in action, 2nd September 1917, near Hulluch, France, whilst supervising a wiring party.
