Born and lived at Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Son of John and Emma Bark(e)s, of 22, Charlotte Street, Ilkeston, Derbyshire. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting on 1st April 1918 at Derby. He went to France on 14th August 1918 and was killed in action, 5th September 1918, aged 19, in the attack on Mouette Trench near Flers, France.
