Son of Matilda Barker, of Derby, of 12, Avondale Road, Derby. He was a clerk prior to enlisting. He has commissioned Second Lieutenant 13th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 7th April 1915 and was posted to 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 23rd March 1916 at La Creche, France. He was wounded twice at Montauban and Longueval in August 1916 during the Battle of the Somme, rejoining his battalion, on 21st November 1917. He was awarded the Military Cross, London Gazette 26th July 1918, For his actions in the rearguard during the retreat from Hermies with the 10th Battalion when he took charge of a company when the company commander was killed, and successfully repelled three attacks, handling his men with great courage and determination. His work at all times was particularly praiseworthy. He was mortally wounded at Inchy, France by a German sniper on 13th October 1918, aged 24 and died the same evening.
