Son of Lewis and Ada Barker, of 4 Byron Yard, Saddler Gate, Derby. He enlisted on 30th March 1915 in the R.A.M.C. at Derby. He was transferred to the 3/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 18th December 1915 and posted to the 1/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 17th March 1916 and went to France on the same day. He was killed in action, on 1st July 1916, during the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
