Born at Rochdale, Lancashire and lived at Orrell, Lancashire. Son of James Henry and Emily Barker, of 10 Church Street, Orrell. He was a butcher prior to enlisting on 9th March 1915 at Wigan, Lancashire. He went to France on 22nd September 1915 and suffered a shrapnel wound to his scalp on 1st July 1916. He was awarded the Good Conduct Badge, 9th March 1917 and was transferred to the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 1st November 1917. He was killed in action, 10th October 1918, in the attack on the German positions, near Bohain, France.
