Born and lived at Riddings, Derbyshire. Son of James and Annie Barber, of Riddings, Derbyshire. He was a domestic gardener prior to enlisting at Ilkeston Derbyshire. He was killed in action, on 31st July 1917, attacking German positions near Bellewaarde Lake/Hooge, Ypres, Belgium, in the Battle of Pilkem Ridge, during the 3rd Battle of Ypres.
