Born at Belper, Derbyshire. Son of William and Annie Barber, of Nether Heage, Derbyshire. Husband of Rose Barber, of Queens Street, Belper. He was a Coal Miner prior to enlisting at Belper on 26th March 1912. He went to France on 3rd March 1916 and was killed in action, on 1st July 1916, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
