Born in Sheffield, Yorkshire. Son of Frederick and Annie Bans, of 78, Red Lion Street, Nottingham. Husband of Margaret Banks, of 6, Thoresby Street, Nottingham. He was a general labourer prior to enlisting at Nottingham on 31st August 1909 into the 4th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He was posted to the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment on 11th November 1914 and went to France on 14th November 1914. He received a gunshot wound to his shoulder on 11th December 1914 and was admitted to No. 11 Stationary Hospital, Rouen, France, on 12th December 1914. He was then transferred to England on Hospital Ship “Asturias” on 16th December 1914. He returned to France on 18th March 1915 and was posted to the 1st Battalion Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment on 18th March 1915. On the 12th November 1916, he was admitted to a casualty clearing station suffering from Pyrexia and was transferred to No. 6 General Hospital, Rouen, France. He was then invalided to England on Hospital Ship “Gloucester” 20th November 1916. He returned to France on 5th April 1917 and was posted to the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, then was posted to the 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment on 27th April 1917. He was killed in action, 21st March 1918, aged 23, during the German offensive near Hermies, France.
