Born at West Hallam, Derbyshire and lived at Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Husband of Kate Bancroft, of 20, Lime Street, Ilkeston. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting on 14th August 1914 at Derby. He was promoted Corporal, 18th August 1914 and went to Gallipoli on 1st July 1915. He was killed in action, 9th August 1915, in the attack at Ismail Oglu Tepe, (Chocolate Hill), Gallipoli, Turkey.
