Born at Sutton in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire and lived at South Normanton, Derbyshire. Son of Robert Henry and Ellen Ballard of 32, Carr Lane, South Normanton, Derbyshire. He was a coal miner at Blackwell Colliery, Derbyshire prior to enlisting on 8th December 1914 at Sutton-in-Ashfield. He went to France on 14th July 1915 and suffered gunshot wounds to his head on 13th September 1915. He was admitted to No.25 General Hospital Camiers, France and transferred to England, on 30th September 1915. He returned to France on 2nd January 1916 and rejoined his battalion on 4th February 1916. He died of wounds, 19th July 1916, at No. 5 General Hospital Rouen, France, received near Contalmaison, France, during the Battle of the Somme.
