Born at lived at Longton, Staffordshire. Son of Peter and Eliza Anne Ball, of 146, Heathcote Road, Longton. Husband of Eliza Ball, of 153, Heathcote Road, Longton. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting at Longton. He went to France on 31st August 1915 and was killed in action, 1st July 1916, aged 33, in the attack on the German positions at Ovillers, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
