Son of John William and Mary Hannah Baker, of 20, Princess Street, Ardwick, Manchester. He was a packer prior to enlisting on 17th April 1917 at Manchester. He went to France on 19th August 1917 and suffered a gunshot wound to his right knee, 4th September 1917. He was treated at No. 14 General Hospital, Wimereux, France and was transferred to England on Hospital Ship Princess Elizabeth, 13th September 1917. He returned to France on 24th March 1918 and was transferred to the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 26th March 1918. He was wounded in action on 26th April 1918 and died, 27th April 1918, aged 23, at No. 3 Casualty Clearing Station, Arneke, France.
