Born at Chesterfield, Derbyshire and lived at South Normanton, Derbyshire. Son of Joseph and Annie Jane Bailey, of Spondon, Derbyshire. He was a colliery fitters assistant prior to enlisting at Chesterfield, 3rd November 1914. He went to France on 27th August 1915. He was awarded the Military Medal London Gazette on 9th December 1916, for his gallantry and devotion to duty when in the attack at Flers Le Sars on 1st October 1916. He died of typhoid fever, 15th January 1918, aged 24, at Istrana, Italy.
