Company Sergeant Major Richard Bailey

Battalion: 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.

Born in Staffordshire. Son of William Bailey, of Lane End, Derrington Staffordshire; Husband of Annie Elizabeth Bailey, of Stowe By Chartley, Stafford. He was a groom prior to enlisting in the Derbyshire Regiment on 7th January 1903 at Stafford. He was posted to the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment on 5th March 1904 and served in India. He was appointed Lance Corporal on 7th April 1906. He was appointed 2 Good Conduct Badges on 16th October 1906. He was promoted Corporal 13th February 1908, appointed Lance Sergeant 14th January 1911 and promoted Sergeant 13th October 1911.

He re-engaged in Bombay, India with the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment on 8th October 1913 and went to France on 14th November 1914. He received a gunshot wound to his left eye on 25th February 1915 and was treated at No. 26 Field Ambulance. He was then transferred to No. 6 Casualty Clearing Station at Merville, France and then on to the 13th Stationary Hospital at Boulogne, France 26th February 1915. On 2nd March 1915, he was transferred to England. On recovery, he was posted to the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and went to Gallipoli on 18th September 1915. He was appointed Company Sergeant Major 28th April 1916 and returned to France 28th June 1916 and was killed in action, 24th November 1916, age 35, whilst on a working party north of Beaumont Hamel, France.
