He was born at Stretton, Clay Cross, Derbyshire and lived at King’s Street, Clay Cross. He was a miner at Alma Colliery, Clay Cross prior to enlisting at Clay Cross in June 1915. He went to France on 26th February 1917 and was killed in action on 27th April 1917, during the attack on Quarries and Cologne Farm, France.
