Battalion: 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.

Born at Coddington, near Newark, Nottinghamshire. Son of Joseph and Mary Ann Backhouse of 16, Balderton Gate, Newark. He enlisted at Newark and was a professional soldier, serving in India before going to France on 4th November 1914. He was killed in action on 17th November 1914, aged 30, whilst serving in the line near Pont Du Hem, France.
