Born and enlisted at Ipswich, Suffolk. Son of Robert Carter and Esther Backhouse, of 3 Short Street, St. Clements, Ipswich, Norfolk. He was a general labourer prior to enlisting into the 1/8th Battalion, 7th July 1911. He went to France on 4th November 1914 with the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He was promoted to Sergeant on 25th April 1917. He died of wounds, 22nd September 1917, at No. 53 Casualty Clearing Station, Bailleul, France.
