Sergeant Harry John Avis

Army Number : 73000 (formerly 21958 Essex Regiment)

Battalion: 11th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.

Son of Harry and Rosina Avis, of Dovercourt, Harwich, Essex. He was a groom prior to enlisting at Colchester on 3rd November 1915. He was appointed Lance Corporal on 29th April 1916 and went to France on 24th May 1916. He was wounded in action on 1st July 1916 and was admitted to No. 88 Field Ambulance with shrapnel wounds to his head. He was sent to No.5 General Hospital at Rouen on 3rd July 1916. He was then transferred to the 11th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment on 13th July 1916. He was promoted Corporal 3rd February 1917 and Sergeant 26th March 1917. On the 16th October 1917, he suffered shrapnel wounds to his buttocks and was sent to No.53 General Hospital at Wimereux and died of wounds on 30th October 1917, aged 22.
