Born at Ashbourne, Derbyshire. Son of Alice E. Avery of 1, Station Street, Ashbourne. He was a draper prior to enlisting at Buxton, Derbyshire on 13th November 1914. He was appointed Lance Corporal 16th July 1915, promoted Corporal 30th October 1915 and Sergeant 26th February 1916. Whilst serving in Dublin during the Irish rebellion he was admitted to King George’s Hospital, Dublin 18th May 1916, with a sceptic abrasion on his right heel and was discharged 13th June 1916. He went to France on 26th February 1917 and was killed in action, 1st December 1917, during the attack near La Vacquerie, France.
