Born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Son of Richard and Elizabeth Atterby, of Dalestorth, Skegby, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. He enlisted at Mansfield and was killed in action, 20th September 1917, aged 23, during the attack at Klein Zillebeke, Belgium.
