Private Percy Astill

Battalion: 11th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.

Born at Southwell, Nottinghamshire. Son of Mr Robert William and Arabella Astill, of 9, Bruce Grove, Nottingham. Lived in the Meadows, Nottingham. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting at Nottingham on 24th August 1914. He went to France in May 1916 and was admitted to No. 24 General Hospital, Etaples, France, on 25th May 1916 with a sprained left ankle, which he sustained whilst practising bayonet fighting at No. 1 training camp, Etaples. On the 28th September 1916, he suffered shrapnel wounds to his left arm and was admitted to 2nd Field Ambulance, being transferred to No.1 South Midland Casualty Clearing Station, Grove Town, Meulte, France, where he died 3rd October 1916, aged 19.
