Born at Ruddington, Nottinghamshire, Son of Herbert Askew of Hill Farm, Linby, Nottinghamshire. He was a farm worker prior to enlisting at Derby on 25th May 1918 being attached to the 4th Battalion Gloucester Regiment on 12th June 1918. He went to France on 23rd September 1918 and was posted to the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment on 26th September 1918. He was killed in action, 8th October 1918, during the attacks on Doon Mill Copse and Doon Hill, near Brancourt, France.
