Son of Charles and Sarah Ann Askew, of Market Street, South Normanton, Derbyshire. He enlisted at South Normanton, 1st March 1915, went to France on 12th October 1915 and was Killed in action, 1st July 1916, aged 27, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
