He was born at Doddington, Lincolnshire. Son of Thomas and Mary Ann Asher. Husband of Ethel Asher of 18, Redcliffe Road, Mansfield. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting at Mansfield. He was killed in action, 1st July 1916, whilst serving in the line near Givenchy, France.

His brother Private Frank Asher of the 2nd Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment also fell in the Great War.
