Born at Nottingham and lived at 36, George Street, West Bridgford, Nottingham. Son of James and Clara Ash, of 27, Russell Street, Nottingham. He worked for Nottingham District Post Office prior to enlisting at Nottingham. He died of wounds, 24th April 1917, aged 24, whilst a prisoner of war.
