Born in South Kensington, Middlesex. Husband of Ada Arrowsmith, of 5, Shaw’s Row, Brampton, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting at Chesterfield on 30th November 1914. He went to Gallipoli on 1st July 1915 with the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He was posted to the 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment on 29th October 1915, the 3rd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment on 4th December 1915 and the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment 1st February 1916. He was Killed in action on 5th July 1916, aged 35, in the attack on the German positions at La Boisselle, France, during the Battle of the Somme.
